Shout out to my student, Josh, who joined the Kings County Concert Band this year. I had the privilege of attending their concert yesterday at Columbia University’s Festival of Winds.
It’s inspiring to see my adult students join ensembles and experience the absolute joy of making music with others.

Don’t underestimate the power of sight! Watching yourself can illuminate little tendencies you have (especially in your fingers).

Fail safe warm up routine right here!! Always gets me perfectly warmed up before a rehearsal 🤓

The first tip that I give students who are preparing to sight read in an audition is to make sure they are taking time to read the music before playing.
It sounds like simple advice, but auditions are stressful and it’s easy to allow the stress and adrenaline to push you directly into sight reading before taking time to read through the piece.
Judges appreciate when students show maturity and take time to read the music, even when it isn’t explicitly stated that you can take time.
Count to three, slow your heart rate down, and look for the tricky bits in the sight reading. You can cut down on so many common mistakes just by spending an extra 30 seconds reading through the excerpt.

For real though… let’s stop using broken reeds!
(No reeds were harmed in the making of this video…)

No more endless repetitions!
Start adding more intention to your practicing and identify exactly what you are fixing (and how) for each repetition that you play.
You’ll improve quickly and streamline your practicing 🤓

Sight reading can seem scary at first, but it is so crucial to developing the skills to become an excellent and well-rounded musician.
If I could recommend one thing to students struggling with sight reading it would be… DO. IT. EVERY. DAY! I can not emphasize this enough (plus the tips listed in the video as a cherry on top) 🤓

Sometimes the thought of starting a practice session hurts… when that happens, I have a few tried and true cheats to get myself practicing and having fun!
My go to cheat is to start off by sight reading a piece that I love or that I’ve always wanted to play. There’s no shortage of these pieces so it’s easy to find something to be excited about! After a few minutes of playing, I usually find myself relaxing into the practice session and even enjoying myself.
From there, it feels much easier to switch over to my work for the day.

Today I am using Rabaud’s, Solo de Concours for fast finger practice! I always find it helpful to learn solos that are played freely and out of time with the metronome. I get the solo to my maximum speed and then feel a lot more confident playing around with rubato.
My student is preparing this for a recital at Carnegie Hall, so I’ve been having fun relearning the piece.

Music teachers! This is your sign to stop giving your students all of the answers. Our job is to give students the tools and support to discover the answers for themselves (while providing helpful hints and encouragement along the way ofc!).
Students who are supported in their self discovery and who feel comfortable problem solving are more likely to take risks, try new things, and feel proud of their everyday accomplishments.

I’m not gonna lie… I only started stretching before practicing this year 🤫 But it’s game changing!!
I can’t believe I’ve missed out on 20 years of tension free playing! Who has recommendations for musician stretches?

Today I’m working with one of my online beginner clarinetists to gain a better understanding of tongue position and articulation.
I really love working with beginner clarinetists to ensure that they are starting off with excellent fundamentals. Building better spatial awareness in your mouth is important for clarinetists of all ages and abilities, so don’t hesitate to go back to the easiest exercises possible to figure out where your tongue is!

Don’t overlook the mental side of performing! Practicing mental toughness before a performance can take away some of the fear and help keep you calm during concerts/auditions.

Ever feel your eyes narrow and your body tighten after spending hours practicing your instrument? This is a normal byproduct of focusing on one thing for an extended amount of time, however, as musicians it’s important to find ways to return to a sense of relaxation.
Here are 3 reasons musicians should look at art to supplement their practicing:
✨ Releases dopamine and endorphins, which can make you feel happy and alert
✨ Stimulates creativity and a sense of wellbeing
✨ Increases focus and productivity

As musicians, we’re trained to perfect our craft before sharing it with others and I find this backfires on us so quickly!
I always encourage my students to try new things and jump into the deep end, even when they aren’t feeling 100% ready. Why? Because through the practice of pushing yourself and expanding your comfort zone, you will grow exponentially. The next time you have an opportunity to try something new or to join an ensemble, I strongly encourage you to try it! You’ll be amazed at how new and challenging experiences can jump start your progress and take you to the next level.
